Summary/Abstract: After the end of the First World War, conditions for change arose in Chile: the dominant parliamentarian regime had used up its capacity to deal with the crises. The pressure for social reforms from the society and at the same time the systematic refusal of the government to implement such lead to escalation of tensions. The army and especially the junior officers turned out to be the engines and leaders of this process, which after a series of cataclysms in the second half of 1924 and 1925 resulted in a new Constitution that changed the institutional structure of Chile and provided stability for the next half a century.
