Summary/Abstract: The present article looks at some of the characteristics of the Brazilian dictatorship “Estado Novo” and the circumstances around its dissolution. It analyzes the events leading up to the establishment of the regime in 1937. The study focuses on the figure of Getúlio Vargas and the actions of his administration before, during and after the Second World War. It is examined what political effect does the participation of Brazil in the war have on the Vargas regime. Finally, the paper turns toward the consequences of the reestablishment of the democratic process in Brazil after 1945, analyzing some social, political and economic factors around the first two federal governments, elected according to this seemingly more liberal political model.
