Summary/Abstract: One of the most popular ideas about the meaning of the political changes in Bulgaria in November 1989 was related to the fall of the totalitarian regime and the subsequent democratization of the country. This is not accidental, because in a short time the basic principles of democracy have been implemented - establishing legal frameworks in line with international law, freedom of speech, freedom to form and express political will, open and active civil society. From this point of view, it is perfectly understandable that the early 1990s was a time filled with euphoria, hopes and expectations for the future. However, already in the first half of the decade the optimistic narratives for equal opportunities and expectations for the upcoming better life have been replaced by experienced impossibilities and disappointments, because in parallel with the democratization negative processes were developing for a large part of the population - severe economic crisis, high unemployment and the emergence of acute social inequalities. This post-socialist development is of particular importance for the culture of memory and especially for the assessment of socialism for some of the people who have life and work experience before and after 1989. It is this relationship that is the subject of this analysis.
