Summary/Abstract: The subject of this article is a consideration of the assumptions of a socially responsible city. The author, referring to selected concepts of shaping cities, points to the types and functions of cities in European culture. She also emphasises political and economic power in shaping cities. Thus, the author shows the exclusion of city dwellers in decisions concerning the foundation and development of the city within which they function. The author formulates a thesis on the necessity of adopting the principle of social responsibility for the well-being of residents as a regulative principle of urban policy. She argues her position with the need to take into account diverse social interests. She sees the shaping of a socially responsible city as a coordination of interests pursued by entities from the public, private and non-governmental sectors, as well as citizens themselves. The realisation of the indicated premises is conditioned by the author on the moral improvement of individuals and the improvement of state law.
