Summary/Abstract: The article outlines the process of shaping the collective memory of Wrocław’s inhabitants after 1945. It highlights the diversity of ways in which they refer to the past (the German history of the city, the mythologized history of Poland, memories of “private homelands”). It points out the role played by the city’s memory in communication, associated with successive generations growing into the city and its transformation into cultural memory. It uses the category of mnemotopos, emphasizing the symbolic rather than topographic character of memory sites. It highlights the role of mnemotopoi and their layouts in shaping the identity of the city. The article serves as an introduction to the presentation and analysis of selected Wrocław’s mnemotopos.
