Summary/Abstract: Intellectual disability is a unique phenomenon, not a disease but a condition. This defi cit remains the focus of interest for representatives of many fi elds of science. The aim of the study is to learn about the essence of mental retardation in the context of two fi elds of science: medicine and law, and the consequences resulting from this condition. It was assumed that the condition in question is of a unique nature, giving rise not only to eff ects recognized in medicine, but also in law. The thesis formulated in this way requires confi rmation or exclusion, hence an analysis of the literature on the subject and legal acts is necessary.
