Summary/Abstract: Although the terms that constitute the contemporary paradigm of “cultural diversity” are of Latin origin, does its meaning, today a positive and inclusive one, have any overlap with the Ancient Roman reality? This paper sets out to seek answers in Latin texts (and contexts), by examining the occurrences of certain terms from the semantic area are allotted to the idea of Roman culture: cultus, humanitas, barbarus, virtus their meanings and their share within the identity-otherness relationship.
