Allegorical interpretation of the liturgy of the hours by Amalary of Metz

Summary/Abstract: The following paper represents the allegorical interpretation of the Liturgy of the Hours in the Amalary’s of Metz primary work “Liber Officialis”. The liturgical allegory searches for “spiritual” meaning of words, gestures, postures and customs. Amalary builds his interpretations on time, numbers and celestial objects symbolism. He is interested in word etymologies, postures interpretations and customs that were used during prayers.
