Summary/Abstract: Domestic violence is widespread and characteristic of all societies and social communities. Domestic violence in one’s own home is its most common form. The history of domestic violence in married couples in Serbia and the use of force against women in the past is analyzed from the perspective of male dominance over women and her overall position in society. The violent attitude towards women stemmed from patriarchal cultural patterns, traditional forms of behavior and disparate relations of power. Not only women but also children were exposed to different forms of domestic violence in Serbia. Domestic violence in the socialist state was invisible, mostly perceived as something that belonged to the privacy of family life. Demands to stop treating it as such first appeared in the 80s of the 20 th century. Domestic violence was established as a separate criminal offence in 2002. Research carried out in Serbia shows that domestic violence against women, whether it is manifested as physical violence or takes other forms, is widespread and even more present than in neighboring countries.
