Summary/Abstract: Status quo bias is a cognitive bias that affects the thousands of decisions we make throughout our lives. The purpose of this study is to propose a theoretical model that explains this bias, which often leads us to inaction. The literature review has considered personal traits and other cognitive biases as explanations for the status quo effect. These biases include sunk cost fallacy, loss aversion, and omission bias. On the other hand, regret avoidance behavior is also considered as one of the variables that could directly explain the status quo effect. The cognitive reflection variable, as a measure of individuals' ability to use their second systems, has been included in the model based on the idea that it could underlie all cognitive biases. The theoretical model presented has the potential to shed light on the channels that fuel status quo bias. This, in turn, could lead to predictions and policy recommendations regarding when and how to intervene in status quo bias.
