The made studies and results provide evidence that allows a comprehensive assessment of conservation scenarios. Depending on the approach of the institutional policies tofind anappropriate balance between the preservation of the writtencollections and the financial and energy investments.International environmental targets are becoming increasingly regulated and the library sector is expected to experience increasing pressure to reduce energy consumption. The expenditure of energy to achieve tight control of relative humidity can contribute to the causes that devastate entire collections.Climate change is often seen as the greatest challenge of the twenty-firstcentury. Sustainable development, defined as „meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” is considered to offer the greatest promise of success in meeting this challenge.
