Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the use of metaphors in information design, with a particular focus on interfaces and navigation. Types of metaphors are presented with examples, various metaphors in interface design over the years are discussed, and the current use of metaphors in UI and UX is examined, with a particular emphasis on spatial metaphors. Heuristics exploring metaphors in information systems are reviewed, recommendations for effective implementation of metaphors in digital environments are included, and arguments criticizing such approaches are presented. A literature review and case studies were used to analyze the subject matter.
