Some aspects of language contact between English and Albanian language

Summary/Abstract: This article aims at outlining some of the main aspects characterising the indirect contact that exists between English and Albanian language. Here it is provided the foundation for the rising of Alblish (Albanian + English) since the beginning of the 20th century, as it covers some morphological and semantic features the English borrowings acquire in the Albanian language, their orthography aspect, some caiques as well as a considerable number of neologisms coined in Albanian under the impact of the English language. The author provides a background of the studies and researches conducted in Albania, making reference to acknowledged Albanian linguists who have elaborated on the issue of Anglicisms and the impact of the English language on Albanian, such as Xhevat Lloshi, Valter Memisha, Hajri Shehu, Jani Thomai, Vesel Nuhiu, Rrahman Paçarizi, etc. Anglicisms and their typology in the Albanian language cannot be studied in isolation, therefore an extensive reference is made to the European context and the numerous studies and researches conducted by noted Anglicists such as Manfred Gorlach, Henrik Gottlieb, Rudolf Filipovic, Alexander Onysko, Ivan Klajn, etc. Apart from the direct translations of English-written news, literature books, movies, etc., many Anglicisms came into Albanian via the two main ‘suppliers’ and ‘inspirators’ of the Albanian language (in particular during the first half of the 20th century): French and Italian language. The newspapers and magazines consulted and the examples provided in the article bear proof of the traces these two languages have left on the Albanian Anglicisms. This is reflected in their orthography as well as in their morphological and semantic features. Several Pseudo-anglicisms in Albanian are also imported from these two languages. Notwithstanding the main group of Anglicisms that are in common use, that fill the needs and lexical gaps Albanian language has, two other interesting groups of Anglicisms in Albanian can be mentioned: the Anglicisms used ‘temporarily’ in the Albanian press during the first half of the 20th century, came out of use during the communist regime isolation and ‘revived’ after the 1990s; the second group refers to the Anglicisms that were common during the first half of the 20th century and ‘disappeared’ after the 1950s. The article underlines also the necessity of having in place clear and applicable language policies that can regulate the borrowing process in the Albanian language, borrowings that have with particular reference to the numerous English ‘flooded’ Albanian after the 1990s.
