Summary/Abstract: Psychotherapy involving intercultural couples necessitates a heightened sensitivity and profound comprehension of cultural and linguistic disparities. A pivotal aspect of this process is the utilization of a third language, which serves as a vital tool for fostering mutual understanding and effective communication between partners. The circumstance wherein each individual in the couple— oftentimes including the therapist—originates from distinct cultures and employs different languages accentuates various facets of individuality, gender dynamics, familial influences, and cultural differences. These elements of ‘otherness’ within the couple dynamic, which may be inadvertently disregarded in monolingual therapies, come to the forefront when working with multicultural couples. Consequently, engaging with couples who communicate in a foreign language unveils a previously unnoticed ‘blind spot’ within the therapeutic framework, offering valuable insights for practitioners involved in monolingual therapeutic approaches.
