The origins of church music in western Romania

Summary/Abstract: The present article proposes an incursion into the theories related to the Orthodox church music specific to western Romania (more precisely from Banat and Southern Crișana) respectively into the actual sound universe of this musical genre, from which it can be concluded relatively easily that we have to he makes music that indisputably comes from Byzantine music. Throughout the last century, this topic has given rise to heated discussions among musicologists, not a few being those who claimed that the source of inspiration for church music in the west of the country is either folklore or the music of the Serbian Orthodox Church. However, the conclusions of the musical analyzes show a much more nuanced reality that recognizes the impact that the church music of the Serbs had on the Banat and southern Crișana, but demonstrates that the origins must be sought in Byzantine music, even if, until this moment, the dynamics of this evolution have not is totally clarified.
