Summary/Abstract: The article analyses methods of presenting the relationships between China and the West in "The Overseas Devil" by Wacław Sieroszewski. The novel presents factors that shape the negative image of relationships between the Chinese and the Europeans, such as stereotyping and fetishization of the Chinese culture by Western people, their lack of will to engage in contact with Chinese as well as their colonialist attitude, visible both at the level of the economic practices and the symbolic definitions of terms such as progress and civilisation. The article also analyses different versions of the conclusion of the novel and their influence on the moral of the story.
