Summary/Abstract: The past two decades of the twenty-first century have brought many events that seemingly could not or should not have happened. The scope of already existing dangers, comprising those resulting from extreme natural phenomena and technical failures, has expanded to encompass also dangers associated with political and economic destabilisation as well as with militaryconflicts. Those events indicate the possibility of escalation of threats beyond not only the accepted boundaries, but even our imagination. Evidently, those events impinge on national security issues, resulting in the necessity to enhance national security systems, including crisis management systems. The creation of a system to protect the life and health of citizens and national assets from the effects of natural disasters and technical failures is the responsibility of the state. Regardless of this, international andcross-border cooperation, as a result of the deepening of European integration, is intensifying, also encompassing issues of crisis management. Cross-border security cooperation taking place on the borders of a number of EU member states is not without history. Through joint efforts, the road infrastructure has been improved and action plans have been devised for administering natural heritage and for prevention of natural disasters caused by floods or natural disasters in mountainous regions. Currently, more and more cross-border crisis management initiatives are emerging, and today’s security experience requires cooperation and joint operation of crisis management systems in neighbouring countries.
