Police Cynology in the Face of Contemporary 21st Century Threats

Summary/Abstract: In view of the constantly changing dynamics and structure of crime and the related detection process, it seems necessary to present the role of service dogs in the aspect of contemporary problems of criminology. In this perspective, the organisational units of the Polish Police themselves have reported the need to regulate a number of important conditions related to the organisation and performance of service by a dog handler, as well as supervision of the organisation and use of a dog in service in order to, inter alia, effectively conduct the detection process. New types of crimes, the presence of contemporary threats and new technologies have forced the introduction of changes in police cynology aimed at adapting a number of occurring needs,to the contemporary service pragmatics, conducted detection processes and performed official tasks by police officers with the use of service dogs. Particularly noteworthy are the changes introduced in the service pragmatics, made in the division into categories of dogs. The author undertook his scientific considerations due to the essence of the changes made in legal regulations, which undoubtedly contribute to the improvement of the security of the state in connection with the growing threats in the 21st century and constitute an adequate reaction on the part of law enforcement bodies in the aspect of combating criminal offences.
