Summary/Abstract: Addiction tends to be misunderstood, including by clinicians. Practicing clinicians are often in the position of having to decide whether certain potentially addictive medications can be prescribed to a patient — thinking that either it is simply not a problem, especially with this, particular patient — or it is a very serious problem with any patient. Their hesitance to prescribe tends to be a result of multiple factors. But one tends to be an identification with the patient. This is clearly a generally important aspect of relating to a patient, but it is probably misguided in the case of a patient’s addiction.
