Organisation and Functioning of Supervision over the ‘Propaganda Division’ in the Central Structures of the Polish United Workers’ Party between 1948 and 1956

Summary/Abstract: The research attempts to shed light on the supervision of the so-called propaganda department in the central structures of the Polish United Workers’ Party (PZPR) between 1948 and 1956. The comprehensive analysis allows for the formulation of an opinion that the greatest influence on propaganda policy and mass media activity was exerted by the departments of the Central Committee of the PZPR, to which direct control over the functioning of the press and radio was assigned. The personnel policy carried out by the top leadership of the PZPR emerged as one of the most important supervisory instruments.
