Zuzana Čaputová and her presidency of Slovakia in 2019-2024

Summary/Abstract: Each head of state creates its own style of leadership. Zuzana Čaputová and her influence on Slovakpolitics became the object of analysis and was considered a peculiar phenomenon in the Centraland Eastern European countries. Indeed, her actions mobilised the Slovaks for modernisation andEuropeanisation. Almost immediately after winning the election, Čaputová also became a Slovaksymbol of democracy. On the other hand, the lack of political support from Slovak parties, political problems and the governing style of many politicians in Bratislava thwarted her efforts and pre-vented democratic change within the state. Her approach to many issues, the values promotedand the creation of high ethical standards in the resolution of political disputes have failed to pushSlovak politicians to improve the quality of public debate in the country. Yet, the phenomenon ofČaputová’s presidency of Slovakia leads to analysis and questions about modern political leader-ship and the problems that stand in the way of modern democracies in populist times.
