Summary/Abstract: In the literature of the first half of the 20 century the figure of the con man gained a standing as one of the most expressive figures of the crisis of contemporary consciousness. It followed as a shadow the optimistic narrative and enthusiasm accompanying the modernity, showing the dark side of this processes. For Polish writers of the first half of the 20 century (including Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz, Andrzej Strug and the authors th of the First Avant-garde), just as for the European writers (Thomas Mann, André Gide, Guillaume Apollinaire) an impostor was a character in which the commonplace belief in the chaos of life, naiveté of societies willingly falling to illusion as well as far-reaching destabilization of the framework marking out the everyday ontology came to focus.
