Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the theme of madness in the short story by Vsevolod Garshin A Red Flower in a different perspective than in critical literature. The focus is not on the psychiatric problem but on the process of creating a discourse of the mental disease. During the analysis of the text, some references are also given, for example, to The Dream of a Ridiculous Man by F. Dostoevsky or Ward No. 6 by A. Chekhov. The inter-textual connections with these stories are based on the idea of improving the world and on the process of its metaphorical renaming. However, it is emphasized that Garshin’s story does not observe either the hero’s criticism and rethinking of his idea to save the world by demolishing it or the creation of a personal narrative about it.
