Summary/Abstract: This text is an excerpt from the book Sur écoute : esthétique de l’espionnage (All Ears:The Aesthetics of Espionage) first published by Éditions de Minuit in 2007. Peter Szendyanalyzes the relationship between eavesdropping in politics, eavesdropping in othercontexts, and numerous derivative auditory practices resulting from the political andsocial applications of listening, as well as from the use of auditory prostheses and devices.Szendy simultaneously presents an alternative genealogy of modernity, distinct fromthe visual one, in which social mechanisms of control as described by Gilles Deleuzeprogressively replace surveillance techniques as seen in the works of Jeremy Benthamand later Michel Foucault.
