Summary/Abstract: This paper attempts to apply the assumptions of the theory of internal colonisation developed by the Russian culturalist Alexander Etkind to describe imperial and colonising practices intsarist and Soviet Russia to an analysis of Dombrovsky’s work. A huge role in the system of governance based on internal colonisation is played by, among others, officials, officers andwriters, whom Etkind calls the administrators of the empire. The author of this paper analyses this group of characters in selected works by Yury Dombrovsky, attempting to prove thatbelonging to the class of administrators of the empire results, in the Russian writer’s terms, in a tragic split in personality called, by Etkind a colonial split. The colonial split results fromDombrovsky’s protagonist’s realisation of the fact that he is subject and object of slavery, ‘tool’ and the same time ‘object’ of violence, coloniser and colonised.
