Summary/Abstract: The study presents an approach to youth pastoral care inspired by the exhortation Christus vivit entitled “The Emmaus Model”. In its first part, the study introduces the reader to the pastoral priorities of Pope Francis. The process of synodality, dialogue, the inculturation of the Gospel and the openness of the Church became the inspirational points of the Synod on Youth. The theological impetus for these themes can be found in the Gospel story of the disciples fleeing to Emmaus (Lk 24:13-35), which was presented as a paradigmatic starting point for thinking about the Church’s relationship with youth in the preparation of the Synod on Youth (Instrument laboris). The document begins with the sentence, “Just as our Jesus Christ walked alongside the Emmaus disciples, the Church is called to accompany all young people without exception to the joy of love.” The Emmaus model is based on the same theological foundations as the documents mentioned above. This model contains five elements based on Luke 24: reflective community (Lk 24:13-14), active listening (vv. 15-24), dialogue (vv. 25-26), the gaze of faith (v. 28), and the experience of encountering Jesus (vv. 24:29-32).
