Augustine’s homiletic strategy in the First Homily of his Commentary on the First Letter of John

Summary/Abstract: Augustine’s exegetical homilies on the First letter of John (In Iohannis epistulam ad Parthos tractatus) have attracted the attention of the professional public for a long time and have been examined not only from the theological but also from the homiletic or aesthetic points of view. Together with Augustine’s Commentary on the first chapters of John’s Gospel (Tractatus in Iohannis Euangelium) and his commentaries on the Psalms of Ascents (Enarrationes in Psalmos 119-133) they represent the core of the bishop’s anti-Donatist preaching. In this paper, we attempt to bring these homilies closer to the Slovak reader focusing primarily on the analysis of the preacher’s homiletic strategy applied in the first of Augustine’s ten homilies on 1 John, which we consequently offer in the first Slovak philological translation. The readers will thus have an opportunity to better appreciate Augustine’s rhetorical art and, at the same time, they will be able to confront the Slovak version of Augustine’s original text of the homily with its dramaturgically adapted version already available in the audio form.
