Summary/Abstract: Despite losing its political autonomy after the 1867 dualist reorganization of the Habsburg Monarchy, Transylvania remained an individual entity in the eyes of the armed forces. From an organizational standpoint, there were two level of military administration in Transylvania – the common Imperial and Royal Army, and the Royal Hungarian Territorial Forces. Each of these had their own command institutions and administrative structures, whose task was coordinating the military units stationed in the region, as well as the recruitment process. The Austro-Hungarian military establishment in Transylvania was by no means rigid throughout the dualist era, as it underwent a series of changes in accordance to the general evolution of the Habsburg armed forces.
