Summary/Abstract: In 2023, quarries seem to have rapidly invaded Mersin, just like the ancestral heritage and tourism paradise provinces of Bilecik, Niğde, Antalya and Adana. License permits without EIA and the ability to expand the consumed permitted areas to neighboring areas eliminate geographical ruggedness. The destruction of these rugged areas affects our local climate, and endemic plant areas in Mersin, where new species are still being recorded, are disappearing. Since Mersin's potential for national parks has somehow been blocked, it is located in a geography whose natural and cultural richness is incomparable to any other city, with only a few natural parks, one O.E.C.B., eleven islands and over three hundred registered and unregistered protected areas. For this reason, neither the “seven sleepers-visit” nor the environmental protected areas of Kızkalesi, the symbolic center of summer tourism, can be easily sacrificed for quarries. While this situation has become an environmental and public health problem in our country, we aimed to create a selective perception that will help us understand the environmental impacts of stone and marble quarries. With a new regulation or a new regulation, this cultural, historical, archaeological and natural memory can be protected. The High Council for the Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage should work more actively on this issue and its recommendations should be taken into consideration.
