Summary/Abstract: Manga, as a form of multimodal art, combines text and imagery to create a significant impact on the contemporary cultural landscape, transcending national borders. This pragma-linguistic analysis explores how manga reflects the complexity and interdependence of the concept of yakuwarigo (‘words assigned to a specific role’). Politeness suffixes, such as -tchi and -ssu, play a crucial role in shaping the character and interpersonal relationships of the analyzed character, yet their translation into Romanian presents semantic and pragmatic challenges, highlighting the difficulties of cultural and linguistic adaptation.
