Summary/Abstract: The empty nest phase, characterized by the departure of children, brings significant changes to the couple’s relationship. This article delves into the multifaceted dimensions of this life stage, shedding light on the relational adjustments experienced by couples during the “empty nest” time. Through the analysis of combined and individual interviews with more than 60 individuals who have been in a relationship for at least 20 years and whose children have recently left the family nest, I demonstrate how increased resources such as time and freedom affect the start of a new life stage, communication and intimacy. For the analysis, I use the Model of Relational Turbulence (MTR). This article aims to put the MTR to test and answer a question: how does a couple of parents cope with the “turbulence” that it experiences?
