Summary/Abstract: According the common opinion, Ratiaria is probably founded as military colony, after the Dacian wars of Trajan. However, the investigation of the earlier inscriptions from the colony doesn’t corroborate the opinion that the veterans or other representatives of the military were the stratum that had the most influential or leading position in the city. From the earliest times there are traces that municipal aristocracy from towns of West of the Empire played an important role in establishing the position of the earliest elites in Ratiaria.
