Summary/Abstract: The object of our research is a complex of premises located south of the large basilica to be a part of the bishopric complex in Novae (Moesia Secunda). It is one of the largest facilities of this type in the Balkan Peninsula and the best-explored one and consists of the Early-Christian episcopal basilica with an atrium, the episcopal residence, a basilica minor, a southern complex interpreted as a ptochotrophium. In 1998–2006, the ptochotrophium was explored in detail by the Adam Mickiewicz University Archaeological Expedition. The main task of the research was the study of the spatial layout and determination of the functional purpose of the premises, as well as their preserved interior decoration and equipment. The study has provided evidence that the complex constituted a shelter for the poor and pilgrims who probably visited the tomb of the martyr St. Lupus in Novae, a facility rarely preserved. A complex of rooms adjoining the southern side of the episcopal basilica in Novae was erected in the early 5th century as the final section of the episcopium. The present writers interpreted the southern complex as an almshouse or a ptochotrophium. There are two essential premises for this conclusion: Firstly, there are no signs that the complex featured a hospital, which would classify it as a xeno-dochium, and secondly, it was equipped for the cooking of large amounts of food for its visitors and provided ample room for eating meals, as evidence the ovens set up under the porticos and the substantial sizes of the refectories and the storerooms. Furthermore, the monks operated xenodochia in the monasteries or near them, while the complex in Novae was a bishopric.
