Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of empirical research that examines the attitude of the young people towards the family and marriage. Empirical idea of the research was proposed by the colleagues from Oldenburg’s University (Germany), who initiated international project to analyze young people’s attitude to the family. Theoretical assumptions of the research were formulated in the works of F. W. Busch, W. D. Scholz (2002), R. Nave-Herz (2003) and approved during the international seminars together with the researchers from Spain, Poland, and South Korea (the authors of this article participated there as well). Colleagues from Germany also prepared tool of the research – questionnaire, which was translated to Lithuanian language and predigested during the pilot research that took place in 2002–2003 (E. Giedraitienė, R. Čepienė, 2003). In 2004 with the financial support of Lithuanian Science and Studies Support Foundation a research was carried out. Its main aim was to reveal attitude of young Lithuanian people to marriage and family as social phenomena as well as an alternative to the personal life style. With the help of questionnaire we have tried to ascertain significance and priorities of marriage and other forms of partnership, attitude towards divorce and its reasons, the role of children in the future plans, imagination of men and women’ roles in the family life, as well as peculiarities of genetic family structure and its evaluation. The article presents the part of the research that permits to answer to following questions: how young people value peculiarities of their (parental) genetic family structure, character of the relationship between the parents and parents and children, whether they consider parental family to be an example to follow while creating their own family. The character of genetic family evaluation let us forecast continuity of traditional attitude towards the structure of the family and at the same time it shows an evidence of evaluation tendencies of family institute. Genetic (parental) family is a group, where young people spend relatively the biggest part of their time. Parents are the people, who due to exceptional emotional interaction make a biggest influence on the child’s behavior and development of personality. Devices of social learning determine the big part of experience, consciously or not acquired in genetic family. It is or will be transmitted to the construct of future family, and later – to the one’s behavior in the family. According to M. Bowen (1984), model of relationships in genetic family let us forecast the model of relations, that young person will apply in his own family and even transmit to another generation. Negative or positive experience, system of values and diapason of feelings that were taken from the genetic family become guidelines to interpersonal relations of spouses, to bringing up of a child, and structure of roles, etc.
