Summary/Abstract: Version II of the Schengen Information System is the basic platform of practical exchange andcoordination of information between police and special services of the Schengen area memberstates already for 10 years now. Implemented in 2013, as the common IT suport tool enablingprotection of the European Union external borders, as well as preservation of rule of law andpublic order within its territory, it was developed further over the time with new capabilities andfunctionalities that have been introduced in to the system. At present, due to highly complicatedgeopolitical situation in Europe and actual full-scale military conflict underway caused by anaggression of Russian Federation on Ukraine, the importance of SIS II system raised to the levelnever encountered before.It is also connected to already growing problem of waves ofuncontrolled migration approaching theEuropean borders. At the same time it has to be capableto address and neutralize completely new challenges and threats arising of previously unknownintensity. The present publication is presenting SIS II system concentrating on selected aspects of its functioning and on the base of an experience gained with a practical utilization of SIS IIsystem to-date it points to elements and issues that require further technological developmentand changes within the process of constant optimization of the information exchange platformin question. The authors consider this publication the first step in the cycle dedicated to systemsand tools developed to provide IT support to the state law enforcement institutions.
