Summary/Abstract: Commentary on Karl Jaspers’ concept of philosophical faith. The central theme of this paper is Karl Jaspers' concept of "philosophical faith," which he proposed as a replacement for traditional religious faith, particularly Christianity, which he deemed unacceptable for modern individuals. Contrary to the prevalent opinion, the paper argues that Jaspers' concept of philosophical faith was unsuccessful and intellectually flawed. The paper aims to meet the usual scientific standards while primarily being polemical. Before delving into the main argument, the paper explains the terms "traditional Christianity" and "Christian orthodoxy," which are used interchangeably. These terms are defined based on Roger E. Olson's recent delineation, which highlights a doctrinal consensus among orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant Christians despite their historical disagreements. This consensus includes beliefs in a personal God, the divine revelation in Jesus Christ, the resurrection, the Bible as God's written testimony, the Trinity, and the necessity of faith and religion for a fulfilled life. Olson contrasts this with modern Christianity, which began with Friedrich Schleiermacher and often rejects traditional doctrines, sometimes retaining traditional language but with new meanings.
