Summary/Abstract: Afghanistan holds significant geopolitical importance within the Asian continent due to its strategic location. As a neighbor to China and key states in the Turkestan region, Afghanistan serves as a crucial nexus for warm waters and provides access to Central Asia and the Middle East. In the 19th century, England directed its focus on the region to safeguard the route to India, while Russia sought access to warm seas. At the onset of World War I, a delegation comprising representatives such as German Baron Otto Von Hentig, Turkish officer Mehmet Kazım, and Indian prince Raja Mahendra Pratap was assigned the task of securing Afghanistan's alignment with their interests. The expedition undertook a challenging and perilous journey across Iran to Afghanistan. At times, they fragmented into smaller units to evade British and Russian patrols, eventually arriving in Kabul on October 2, 1915. Despite their persistent efforts, the mission failed to persuade the Emir to participate in the war. This article will also assess Mehmet Kazım Orbay’s political, religious, and socio-economic observations of the people along the routes he traversed during his Afghanistan mission.
