Traces of the 20th Century in Relations between the European Union and Turkey - A Critical Assessment

Summary/Abstract: Relations between the European Union (EU) and Turkey have undergone a series of changes over the course of the 20th century and have faced various challenges. These relations officially began with Turkey's application for full membership of the EU. However, the process for full membership was long and complex, and no progress was made due to various problems. These problems include human rights violations, democratic deficits, the Cyprus problem and economic differences. In addition, the EU's enlargement policy and internal dynamics have also affected relations. Furthermore, the ambivalent policies of the European Union have made relations complex and contradictory. In this paper entitled “Traces of the 20th Century in the Relations between the European Union and Turkey; A Critical Assessment”, only Turkey-EU relations of the 20th century are analyzed. The article discusses the relationship between the parties as the relationship between two opposing genders. In this context, the article is divided into two sub-chapters: “The Acquaintance Period in Turkey-EU Relations; Emergence of the Partnership Relationship in the Context of Political Disputes (1959-1980)” and “The Engagement Period in Turkey-EU Relations; Diplomatic Turbulence and Rapprochement (1980-1999)”, in which the developments are discussed. Taking into account the mutual interests and common goals of the EU and Turkey, this critical assessment examines the direction of Turkey's achievements in the 20th century.
