Summary/Abstract: This research focuses on the development of quantitative relationships that describe the state of the atmosphere. The atmosphere is considered as a massive thermodynamic system and it is described by the specific heat capacity of the air. Global warming is caused by the presence of anthropogenic greenhouse gas pollutants. The processes of photosynthesis are at lower rates and fail to compensate for the higher levels of carbon dioxide accumulation. There is a tendency for the mass of the atmosphere to increase due to the increase in the amount of carbon dioxide resulting in a lower specific heat capacity. Such a condition is described by large amplitudes of air temperature changes for relatively short time intervals, a trend that has been observed recently.
