Summary/Abstract: The borders of the Roman provinces have been a favorite subject of scientific investigations since the beginnings of provincial-Roman archaeology. This study resumes the definitions and ways of understanding the terms "limes" and "Roman border", applied over time with regard to the Province of Dacia. The "Talsperre" model, which explains the structure of the Roman borders in Dacia, is subjected to a critical look. The basic principle of this model of explaining the Dacian limes is based on the fact that each of the passes over the Carpathians was guarded by a castrum, arranged inside the line of the Carpathian Mountains. Also, the actuality of the "fan" model of the Roman border system in Dacia is discussed, a system made up of three concentric (imaginary) circles of Roman fortifications, starting from the Apulum and Potaissa legionary forts in the middle, a row of (so-called) "intermediate" castra and, finally, the row of auxiliary castra arranged on the line of the Carpathian Mountains.
