Summary/Abstract: The emergence and development of fortified settlements is an important element in assessing the level of development of each society and the factors that influenced the construction of such defensive systems. Because, on the one hand, they constitute a socio-economic achievement, and on the other, a political-military one. The research of these elements allows us a better understanding of both the internal situation and the external factors that influenced the appearance or disappearance of the hill fortresses. That is why, through this article, going beyond the borders of the contemporary states, from central and eastern Europe, the author relaunches the discussion regarding the phenomenon of the emergence of fortresses, which were the basis of early medieval social and political structures in Europe, in general, and in the Carpathian- Danube regions, in particular.
