Summary/Abstract: The phrase “defiant obedience” in the title does not imply contradiction, even though it may seem so at first glance, as it encompasses two distinct perspectives: one focused on maintaining and reinforcing the binary gender order and the other on its more or less active subversion and questioning by critical representative(s) within Erika Kronabitter’s fictional worlds. The analysis primarily aims to highlight the battles taking place within the minds of female actors for their own roles and functions within the familial and societal context and to explore possibilities for a qualitatively new formation of coexistence between men and women.
