Summary/Abstract: The subject of the article is the meanings given by men to parenthood in the context of their experience of miscarriage. Narrative interviews with men who have experienced the miscarriage of one or more children in the past were analyzed. The goal of the research was to learn and understand fathers’ reconstructed experiences, and related attitudes and opinions. The empirical data was subjected to a coding and categorization procedure, which made it possible to isolate eight types of meanings given by men to their own role as parents, and to parenthood in general. The results of the analyses indicate that in the context of experienced loss, men describe their parenting as already beginning before the birth of the child, as a relationship with a specific person, which, however, is sometimes “not fully realized” given the lack of imagined and previous paternal experiences. Being a parent in their narratives is revealed as a significant value and a role associated with achieving a sense of fulfillment.
