The illustration in the Bulgarian printed book until 1878. Problems and research guidelines.

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses some issues related to the criteria for belonging of printed books to Bulgarian literature. Emphasis is placed on the need to introduce criteria directly related to their illustrative and figurative content and the need for a new modern reading of the historical development of Bulgarian printed illustration. Some new facts about the development of Bulgarian first and old printed books are commented. The illustrative content of the printed edition is considered as a determining factor for its aesthetic-artistic and for its functional-communicative essence.
