Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt for reconstruction of the circumstances that drove to the foundation of the first state medical library in Sofia at the beginning of twentieth century. On the basis of records of the Supreme Medical Council and some publications of that time, the facts relative to the opening years of its existence were set in order. The Library’s main purpose was to serve all physicians in Bulgaria. Its founding stock was formed by gifts and items taken from the hospital libraries in the country, but funds for purchasing specialized literature were stipulated as well. Besides books and serials from the very beginning the Library acquired dissertations. Quite comprehensibly prevailing part of the library holdings were in foreign languages, of which dominant was French.
