Summary/Abstract: Isidore of Seville (c. 560-636) is one of the important figures of European culture. In addition to his strictly theological interests, he also showed interest in other fields of knowledge related to the artes liberales. He presented the fullest spectrum of his interests in his Etymologies. For the Bishop of Seville, music was an important field of knowledge. He dealt with it on practical grounds and tended to describe it in a concise, clear and diverse manner in his encyclopedia. The musical terminology used by the Bishop of Seville is extremely rich and sometimes difficult to translate into modern languages.
