Summary/Abstract: Are the personal stories and recollections shared with theresearcher during an interview as valuable as official doc-uments such as film acceptance protocols found in statearchives? In the her research on the Amateur Film Clubsmovement, the author used oral history and participantobservation. These methods are often criticized as sub-jective or unreliable, due to their differences from archivalresearch or quantitative empirical methods. In this contri-bution, then, (not) fitting into the issue’s topic (or perhapsinto the formula of the column), she references her mem-ories of her first encounter with amateur cinema to anal-yse the validity, nature, and scientific approach of theseresearch methods. She demonstrates how the choice ofmethodology impacts the perspective and understandingof the researched topic. Her focus is on the challenges anddifficulties associated with using these methods, particu-larly the necessity of adapting the researcher’s approachand behaviour.
