Summary/Abstract: The relationship between literature and film is a constant theme in film criticism, as film involves, through its story and characters, the traits of literature, mythology, and history. Romulus Rusan's perspective, along with that of other theorists, is that art cinema establishes obvious connections with valuable literature and, sometimes, in fortunate cases, with poetry (for example, Tarkovsky's "poetic film"), by relating to the art of words and imagery, without disregarding the multiple artistic forms involved in filmmaking (music, visual arts, stage movement, and actor performance). Articles of film criticism dedicated to these connections between film and literature can be found integrated into all three volumes of Romulus Rusan's film chronicles ("In the Beginning Was Not the Word: Essays on the Art and Authors of Film," "Art without Muse: Films and Their Witnesses," "Filmar," 2022).Through methods of analysis, contextualization, and comparison, we have observed that the relationship between literature and film is a constant theme in Romulus Rusan's works on film. The author's conception is evident in his comments on adaptations: every good film also requires good literature. His conception is not unique, as other cinephiles have advocated for this ideal fusion as well (Călin Stănculescu – "Writers and Film," 2015). For instance, D. I. Suchianu, the first film chronicler in the Romanian space, in his book "The Cinema, this Unknown" (1973), demonstrated that cinematography is literature, in the sense that it is a story, and people communicate by telling stories, as highlighted by Grid Modorcea in cultural discussions with D. I. Suchianu in the volume "Literature and Cinema: Conversations with D. I. Suchianu" (1986). All these film chronicle articles demonstrate a love for film, vast cultural knowledge, and the ability to establish connections between literature, history, mythology, science, visual arts, as only refined minds consistently engaged in study and research can achieve such an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspective.
