Summary/Abstract: The study analyses the first mutilation of the Rzeczpospolita from the point of view of Russian imperial foreign policy. It takes into account the factors and theories that encouraged the Russian state to constantly expand its territory and subjugate other peoples. It examines these aspects during the reign of Catherine II (the Great), covering the specific subjective factors of the period, the role of the Tsarina, Russia’s foreign policy doctrine of the time, the idea of expansion towards the south, Crimea and the Balkans, and the development of the idea of partition of Poland.
