Summary/Abstract: The differences of opinion between Maria Theresa and Joseph II on both domestic and foreign policy are well known. One of the most significant of these was the issue of the first mutilation of the Rzeczpospolita. The paper briefly outlines the historiography of the issue, and then looks from an Austrian perspective at how the Habsburg Monarchy came to be one of the partitioning powers. Finally, it raises some new aspects concerning the motivations of mother and son, which decisively influenced their attitude towards and opposition to the mutilation.
